About
nykolaes is a Brussels based artist working in neofolk, bringing a sound shaped by the grungy side of the 1990s and what the project itself calls a pro post anti singer songwriter modernism. Alongside collaborator Daniël Paul, nykolaes released a debut album simply titled "neofolk" in 2023, which found a warm reception in underground circles. A follow up home recorded record called "Jeudi Matin" came later. The music nykolaes makes with Daniël Paul combines acoustic guitar, homemade instruments and spare electronic elements, with vocals that drift in and out of conventional tuning by deliberate choice. Lyrics move between Dutch, French and English, and the overall palette stretches from gentle grunge to lo fi drone and something that could loosely be called backwards folk. Disarming and a little playful, it resists being pinned down.
