About
Also known as: Desecration, Executioner, Xecutioner
Starting out in Tampa as Executioner back in 1984, Obituary spent a decade helping invent the death metal blueprint before most people even knew the genre had a name. Their 1990 album Cause of Death is still held up as one of the most important death metal records ever made, and by the time The End Complete came out in 1992 it was charting on both sides of the Atlantic and landing them on MTV's Headbangers Ball. Not bad for a band playing some of the heaviest music around. After a five year break they came back swinging, and they have not really stopped since. The core of the band, vocalist John Tardy, his brother Donald on drums, and rhythm guitarist Trevor Peres, has stayed locked in since the very beginning. Eleven studio albums deep, Obituary keep putting out new material, with the track Barely Alive appearing in 2024, proof that old school death metal still has a serious pulse in their hands.
