About
Oliver Leith writes music that sits somewhere between classical composition and electronic experimentation, and his pieces have been picked up by some serious ensembles: the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the Philharmonia, Apartment House and Plus Minus among them. His 45 minute piano and percussion work good day good day bad day bad day, recorded by GBSR Duo for the experimental label Another Timbre, gives a good sense of his style: moments of unexpected grandeur rubbing up against sheer banality, in a way that somehow keeps pulling you back in. It was a Guardian pick of the week and a BBC Radio 3 highlight of 2020. His debut opera Last Days, which premiered at the Royal Opera House's Linbury Theatre in October 2022, drew on Gus Van Sant's fictionalised film about Kurt Cobain's final days, and landed four star reviews in both The Guardian and the Financial Times. He has also had a composition featured on A. G. Cook's 2024 album Britpop, showing just how far his reach extends beyond the concert hall.
