Olivia Lewis is a Maltese singer who built a reputation through sheer persistence. She entered Malta Song for Europe, the national Eurovision selection contest, every single year from 1997 onward, racking up a remarkable eleven consecutive attempts before finally breaking through. Along the way she finished second three years running, in 2004, 2005 and 2006, which says a lot about how consistently close she came without quite getting there. In 2007 she won the Maltese selection with the song Vertigo and headed to the Eurovision Song Contest representing Malta. The result was a tough one: she finished 25th in the semi final with just 15 points and went no further. Still, after a decade of near misses, making it to Eurovision at all was a genuine milestone for an artist who kept showing up and competing long after most would have walked away.
