About
One of four titular organists at Notre Dame de Paris since 1985, Olivier Latry has become one of the most recognisable figures in classical organ music. He stepped into the role following the death of Pierre Cochereau, and when Notre Dame reopened in December 2024 after the fire that damaged it in 2019, Latry was the first to play its restored organ in public, having personally tuned the instrument through the night beforehand. His playing covers a wide range without locking into any single era, though he is particularly associated with the music of Olivier Messiaen, whose complete organ works he recorded for Deutsche Grammophon. Alongside his performance career, which has taken him to over 40 countries, he is a respected improviser working in the French tradition of Tournemire and Dupré. He also teaches at the Conservatoire de Paris and composed Salve Regina in 2007, a piece for organ and choir rooted in earlier improvisations on the Gregorian Marian hymn.
