Bristol producer Om Unit has been quietly reshaping the edges of drum and bass and electronic music since the late 2000s, pulling in threads from jungle, Chicago footwork, dub and beyond. His Om Unit alias first appeared on a Fabric compilation in 2009, and things moved fast from there, with releases on Plastician's Terrorhythm and then a run of EPs and a full album called Threads on Civil Music. One of his most talked about moves was getting access to Goldie's personal DAT tape archive, which fed directly into his 2014 Metalheadz LP Inversions. He also runs his own imprint Cosmic Bridge, which has put out music from the likes of Kromestar, Boxcutter and J:Kenzo alongside his own Torchlight EP series and the Cosmology compilations. His collaborations stretch from a joint EP with Machinedrum under the name Dream Continuum for Planet Mu to a trio of releases with fellow Bristolian Sam Binga. The alias Philip D Kick, meanwhile, is where he first started fusing footwork with classic jungle, a move that felt genuinely new at the time.
