About

Also known as: عمر بشير

Omar Bashir carries one of the most storied names in oud music. As the son of Munir Bashir, widely regarded as one of the greatest virtuosos in the instrument's history, and the nephew of expert oud player Jamil Bashir, he grew up inside a living tradition and has spent his career both honoring and expanding it. He considers himself one of the last heirs to his family's musical legacy, a responsibility he takes seriously. His playing pulls together traditional Arabic music and maqam improvisation with jazz, flamenco, and Hungarian Romani music, a blend that once drew criticism from purists who later went on to imitate him. He has performed at venues including the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Jazz Theater, and the Royal Opera House in Muscat, and took part in the Baalbek International Festival in Lebanon in 2019, the same year his album The Dancing Oud came out. That record sparked pointed commentary from Omar about the declining quality of mainstream Arabic music, a subject he clearly feels strongly about.
