About
Also known as: Alex Omar Smith, Alex. O. Smith, Alexander Omar Smith, Omar S
Detroit producer Omar S, born Alexander Omar Smith, has been quietly building one of the most uncompromising catalogs in electronic music since the early 2000s. Running his own FXHE Records label since 2003, he has put out a sprawling discography across albums, EPs, and mix releases that draws deep from Detroit's house and techno roots without ever sounding like a museum piece. Albums like Just Ask The Lonely and It Can Be Done But Only I Can Do It gave him a cult following well beyond the city, and his label became a genuine home for younger Detroit artists including John FM and HiTech. In recent years his name has been as much in the news for controversy as for music. A physical altercation with Detroit artist Supercoolwicked in November 2023 led to a police investigation, public fallout with artists on his own label, and a wave of boycott calls from within the Detroit scene. Despite that, he opened for Madonna at Little Caesars Arena in January 2024.
