About
Also known as: O. Portuondo, Omara Portuando, Omara Portuodo, Omara Portuondo Peláez, Omara Porturondo
Few voices carry the weight of Cuban music history the way Omara Portuondo's does. She came up through the Cuarteto d'Aida, a vocal group that shared stages with Nat King Cole at the Tropicana and cut records for RCA Victor, before launching a solo career that spans bolero, son cubano, jazz and cha cha cha. Her debut solo album, Magia Negra, grew out of sessions bridging jazz and Cuban music with pianist Julio Gutiérrez, and it set the tone for a career built on crossing genre lines without ever losing her distinctive warmth. She joined the Buena Vista Social Club project in 1996, duetting memorably with Ibrahim Ferrer on the original album and later appearing in Wim Wenders' celebrated film of the same name. Two more albums followed on the World Circuit label, and she remains the only original vocalist still part of the ensemble. Her album Gracias, recorded in 2008 to mark sixty years of singing, brought in collaborators including Brazilian singer Maria Bethânia and Chico Buarque, proof that her appetite for ambitious projects never really let up.
