Robert Haigh built something genuinely rare under the Omni Trio name: a body of drum and bass work that put atmosphere and melody front and centre at a time when the genre was pushing hard in other directions. His sound became shorthand for what people call atmospheric drum and bass, built around intricate breakbeat patterns, orchestrated production, and those sweetly melodic piano lines layered over sampled soul vocals. Tracks like "Renegade Snares", "Mystic Stepper (Feel Better)", and "Thru the Vibe" landed as anthems in the old skool era, all collected on his debut LP The Deepest Cut Vol 1 in 1995. He kept going where most producers stopped, becoming the first drum and bass artist to release six full artist albums, wrapping up the Omni Trio chapter with Rogue Satellite in 2004. Since then he has focused entirely on minimalist piano work under his own name, releasing a steady run of albums that show the classical instincts that were always running underneath the breakbeats.
