Founded in Paris in 1937 as the Orchestre radio symphonique, this French ensemble has gone through several name changes before settling into its current identity as the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. It performs for Radio France and has built a strong reputation in contemporary classical music alongside the broader orchestral repertoire. Over the decades it has been shaped by a string of notable chief conductors, from Eugène Bigot in the postwar years through Marek Janowski and Myung Whun Chung, to Mikko Franck who took the helm in 2015. Jaap van Zweden is set to follow from 2026. The orchestra is based at the Salle Pleyel in Paris, one of the city's most storied concert venues, and remains one of the leading radio orchestras in Europe.
