Origin have been pushing the limits of technical death metal since their Topeka, Kansas roots took shape in the late 1990s. Their fourth album, Antithesis, was a genuine breakthrough, cracking the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart at number 21 in 2008 and landing a video on MTV2's Headbangers Ball. That kind of mainstream visibility is unusual for a band playing music this extreme, and it speaks to how tightly constructed their brutality actually is. Over eight studio albums, the band has built a reputation for playing at speeds and with a precision that most acts in the genre can't match. The lineup has shifted constantly around guitarist Paul Ryan, who has remained the constant creative force, at one point handling all guitar parts on tour solo. Their 2011 Nuclear Blast debut Entity showed they could hold that intensity even as a stripped down trio, and the 2022 playthrough video for Chaosmos suggests they're still very much in that relentless gear.
