About
Orkest Phion is a symphony orchestra that likes to build programmes around a theme, and it has a habit of going well beyond the standard repertoire. Its chief conductor is Alexei Ogrintchouk, and the orchestra regularly teams up with guest conductors and soloists, from prize winning pianists and violinists to musicians from outside the classical world. The programming can be quite adventurous. Phion has put together evenings where Turkish folk and classical music meets symphonic works, in collaboration with the Turkish community of Overijssel and Gelderland, with arrangements written especially for the orchestra. It also does Scandinavian themed New Year concerts, mixing Grieg, Nielsen, Svendsen and Sibelius with a nod to ABBA. Beethoven gets his share of attention too, and the Seventh Symphony has been a crowd favourite at the orchestra's own Beethoven Festival.
