Few metal bands carry the political and spiritual weight that Orphaned Land does. This Israeli act from Petah Tikva has spent decades weaving Mizrahi, Maghrebi Jewish, Arabic, and Turkish musical traditions into their progressive and death doom metal sound, carving out a genre they call oriental metal. Their lyrics push a message of peace and coexistence across Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, and the name itself is a deliberate counterpoint to the term "Holy Land," borrowed from a Yehuda Poliker lyric. Four of their six albums are full concept records, with Mabool retelling the Noah's Ark story through three sons representing each Abrahamic faith, and El Norra Alila drawing on Yom Kippur liturgy while playing with both Hebrew and Arabic meaning. They have built a devoted following across the Middle East, North Africa, and Iran, in countries where the State of Israel is considered an enemy. In 2013 they toured Europe alongside Palestinian band Khalas, and the two acts later released a split album together in 2021 called The Peace Series Vol. 1.
