Few conductors have built a reputation as methodically and durably as Osmo Vänskä. Before picking up a baton, the Finnish maestro spent years as a professional clarinetist, holding the principal chair at the Helsinki Philharmonic before shifting his focus to conducting after studying with Jorma Panula at the Sibelius Academy alongside Esa Pekka Salonen and Jukka Pekka Saraste. He won the International Besançon Competition for Young Conductors in 1982, and the rest followed from there. His recordings of the complete Sibelius symphonies with the Lahti Symphony Orchestra on the BIS label cemented his international standing, and a Grammy for best orchestral performance in 2014 confirmed what critics had been saying for years. His long tenure with the Minnesota Orchestra transformed it into one of the most talked about ensembles in North America. He has also led the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, with whom he recorded the complete Nielsen symphonies. Most recently he served as music director of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra.
