About

Also known as: Oum El Ghaït Ben Essahraoui, Oum El Ghaït BentelSahrawy, Oum el Ghaït Benessahraoui, أم الغيث بنت الصحراوي

Oum El Ghaït Benessahraoui, who records and performs simply as Oum, weaves together an unusually wide musical fabric: hassani desert poetry, Gnaoui rhythms, jazz, soul, gospel, afrobeat and Sufi influences all coexist in her songs, sung across five languages including Moroccan Arabic, Amazigh and Spanish. It is a sound rooted firmly in North African tradition while refusing to stay there. Her debut album Lik'Oum came out in Casablanca in 2009, and she has kept building from there. The 2015 album Zarabi, a tribute to the carpet weavers of M'Hamid El Ghizlane in the Moroccan Sahara, brought in Cuban musicians alongside Moroccan percussionist Rhani Krija, who has played with Sting and Peter Gabriel. Her song Taragalte, from the 2013 album Soul of Morocco, reached a wider audience when it appeared in the 2018 film Beirut. Her most recent album Daba followed in 2020.
