About

Also known as: Dumou Sangaré, Omou Sangare, Oumou Sangare, Youmou Sangoré

Oumou Sangaré is known as the Songbird of Wassoulou, and she earned the title by making that southern Malian tradition, built on old songs and the sound of a calabash, heard around the world. Her debut Moussoulou, which means women, sold more than 200,000 copies across Africa and made her a star by 21. Ali Farka Touré helped her land a deal with the English label World Circuit, which re released it. She writes her own songs, and many tackle love, marriage and the freedom to choose your partner, with a sharp eye on how women are treated. Albums like Ko Sira, Worotan, Seya and Mogoya followed, and she sang on Herbie Hancock's version of Imagine, which won a Grammy. Outside music she runs a hotel in Bamako, once launched a car, and has acted in the film Hawa. In 2024 she picked up the Rolf Schock Prize.
