About

Few guitarists have done more to spread flamenco beyond Spain than Paco Peña. Born in Córdoba, he moved to London in the late 1960s and built a global career as both soloist and accompanist, performing at Carnegie Hall, the Royal Albert Hall, and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. In 1981 he founded the Centro Flamenco Paco Peña in his home city, and later took on the role of artistic director of the Córdoba International Guitar Festival. His influence stretches into education too. In 1985 he became the first flamenco guitarist ever to be offered a professorship at a conservatoire, teaching at the Rotterdam Conservatory. His discography spans decades, ranging from solo recitals like Flamenco Guitar Music of Ramón Montoya and Niño Ricardo to collaborative records with John Williams and Inti Illimani, and the striking Misa Flamenca from 1991. In 1997 the Spanish king Juan Carlos I awarded him the Order of Civil Merit.
