The Dublin born folk singer released his version as a single in 1983 and it stayed in the Irish charts for an extraordinary 72 weeks, becoming the definitive recording of that song. He also hit number one in Ireland with 'Flight of Earls' in 1988, proving his reach went well beyond any one signature tune. After years as a solo performer, Reilly joined The Dubliners in 1996, stepping into the considerable shoes of Ronnie Drew. He stayed with the group for nine years, contributing to albums like 'Further Along' and 'Live from the Gaiety', before heading to New York where he ran several pubs. He eventually returned to Ireland, and his back catalogue, from 'The Town I Loved So Well' to his Ewan MacColl covers record, remains a solid cross section of Irish folk balladry.
