About
Also known as: Paoluo Fresu, Paoulu Fresu
Few trumpet voices in contemporary jazz are as instantly recognizable as Paolo Fresu's. The Sardinian born musician has spent decades building a sound that sits somewhere between lyrical warmth and cool restraint, working trumpet, flugelhorn, muted trumpet, and electronics into something genuinely his own. His live renditions of pieces by Monteverdi and Handel show just how wide his range really is. Fresu has shared stages and studio time with an extraordinary cast, from Gerry Mulligan and Dave Holland to Omar Sosa and Carla Bley. His 2011 release Mistico Mediterraneo, featuring bandoneons played in A Filetta style, is a good example of how he constantly pushes at the edges of jazz. He also runs his own label Tûk Music, founded in 2010, which champions both electronic and ethnic sounds alongside more traditional jazz. On top of all that, he directs the Berchidda Festival Time In Jazz and has led the Nuoro Jazz Seminars for 25 years.
