Few jazz bands have blended the warmth of acoustic melody with full on fusion ambition quite like the Pat Metheny Group. Founded in 1977 by guitarist Pat Metheny and pianist Lyle Mays, the group built its signature sound around Mays' Oberheim synthesizer textures layered over Metheny's fluid guitar work. Their second album, American Garage, hit number one on the Billboard jazz chart in 1979, and the band kept evolving from there, pulling in South American rhythms, bossa nova grooves, and eventually hip hop loops and electronica across a run of Grammy winning records. The group had a genuine knack for reinvention. Their collaboration with David Bowie on "This Is Not America" crossed into mainstream pop territory, reaching the UK top twenty. Later lineups brought in musicians from Mexico, Vietnam, and Cameroon, reflecting the group's restless global curiosity. Their final studio album, The Way Up, released in 2005 on Nonesuch Records, closed out a catalogue that stretched across nearly three decades and left a serious mark on contemporary jazz.
