About
Patricia Kopatchinskaja is a Moldovan Austrian Swiss violinist with a serious aversion to safe programming. She has made it her mission to push beyond the standard violin repertoire, favouring music from the edges rather than the usual parade of Bach, Beethoven and Brahms. That maverick instinct has won her fans across Europe, North America, Japan and Australia, and earned her a Royal Philharmonic Society Music Award in 2014. She plays a Giovanni Francesco Pressenda violin from 1834, whose viola like warmth gives her sound a distinctive edge. On stage she pairs that restless energy with a theatrical streak, having staged ambitious concert productions like "Bye Bye Beethoven" with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and "Time and Eternity" with Camerata Bern. Pianist Polina Leschenko is among her regular chamber music partners, and together they bring that same adventurous spirit to intimate settings. Kopatchinskaja also composes, uses her voice in performance, and has taken on everything from Schoenberg's Pierrot lunaire to a Dadaistic film project based on Kurt Schwitters.
