Few composers can claim a score written from a hospital bed, but Patrick Doyle pulled it off when he penned the entire soundtrack for Quest for Camelot in 1998 while being treated for leukemia. The Scottish composer, born in Uddingston, went on to make a full recovery and kept right on working, racking up scores for more than 60 feature films across a career that spans television, theatre and cinema. His style sits firmly in the cinematic classical and orchestral tradition, and his range is genuinely impressive: from the gangster cool of Carlito's Way to the sweeping period drama of Sense and Sensibility, from the Marvel blockbuster Thor to the Pixar warmth of Brave. Doyle's long creative partnership with Kenneth Branagh is the spine of his career, starting with Henry V in 1989 and stretching across 14 more films together. That first collaboration already announced his talent: the song Non Nobis, Domine took the Ivor Novello Award for Best Film Theme. He has since picked up two Oscar nominations, two Golden Globe nominations, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from both the World Soundtrack Awards and Scottish BAFTA. Along the way he has worked with directors including Robert Altman, Ang Lee, Alfonso Cuarón and Brian De Palma, and collaborated with artists ranging from Placido Domingo to Jarvis Cocker.
