Paul Brady's versions of "Arthur McBride" and "The Lakes of Pontchartrain" are still considered benchmark recordings of those traditional Irish songs, yet he walked away from folk altogether after his 1978 solo debut Welcome Here Kind Stranger, which won Melody Maker's Folk Album of the Year. He spent the 1980s building a reputation as a sharp rock and pop songwriter, releasing Hard Station, True for You, Back to the Centre, and Primitive Dance, while artists like Santana, Dave Edmunds, and Tina Turner lined up to cover his material. Turner recorded his "Paradise Is Here" for her 1986 Break Every Rule album, and Bonnie Raitt, who duetted with Brady on his 1991 album Trick or Treat, put two of his songs on her own Luck of the Draw. Bob Dylan thought enough of Brady's work to name check him in the booklet of a 2006 compilation, which is about as good an endorsement as it gets.
