About
Paul James took the long way round to a Juno Award, which he won in 1992. The Toronto guitarist, singer and songwriter started out playing six nights a week in bar bands, including a stint as house band at the Bermuda Tavern, soaking up blues from the greats who played the nearby Colonial Tavern. Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and Buddy Guy were among those he watched, and Muddy even invited him to sit in on a matinee. His band Lick'n Stick got to open for and back up Bo Diddley in 1973, and Bo took a shine to him, helping on the soundtrack for Diary of a Sinner and handing out career advice. The big lesson: don't sign anything, do it yourself. James later turned down a Columbia Records deal's push toward a Bee Gees sound, though not before releasing singles including Mary Ann, a possible first white reggae song from a Canadian. He also composed music for three Young People's Theatre plays.
