About
Also known as: Pauline Black and The Selecter, Pauline Black of the Selecter
Pauline Black is the voice that Rolling Stone called the best to ever grace a 2 Tone release, and it's hard to argue. As the lead singer of the Selecter, she helped define the ska revival movement in the late 1970s alongside the Specials and Madness, scoring a string of UK Top 40 hits including "On My Radio", "Three Minute Hero" and "Missing Words". Her bewitching soprano and theatrical delivery set her apart from everything else happening in that scene. She has never been just a singer, though. A 1991 Time Out Best Actress win for her portrayal of Billie Holiday, TV roles in The Bill and Hollyoaks, a BBC documentary narration, touring with Gorillaz on the Humanz tour, and an OBE in 2022 for services to entertainment all tell the story of someone who has consistently refused to stand still. She also published her autobiography, Black by Design, in 2011.
