About
Perico Sambeat started out as a classical flautist, but the saxophone won him over, and by 1982 he had moved to Barcelona to play it full time. Since then he has built a catalogue of more than twenty albums, from his self titled debut on EGT in 1991 through Friendship on ACT, Flamenco Big Band on Verve, Sketches of Pangea and a Plays Zappa record. John Fordham of The Guardian called him "an artist of imposing character within a straightish postbop context", which about sums up his place in Spanish jazz. He works across a lot of labels and settings, from trio records with Colina and Miralta to the flamenco flavoured big band project, and he keeps releasing: Atlantis and Roneando followed in 2022 and 2023, with Boreal arriving in 2025. Alongside the playing, he has taught as a professor at Berklee's campus in Valencia since 2013.
