About
Peter Beets has a knack for making jazz feel both deeply rooted and genuinely fresh. The Dutch pianist built his reputation through a series of trio albums on the Criss Cross label, starting with New York Trio in 2001, recorded alongside Rodney Whitaker and Willie Jones III. That record kicked off a run of international work that took him to Birdland in New York, theaters across Europe, and gigs in Japan and beyond. He has shared stages with Wynton Marsalis, Chick Corea, Johnny Griffin, and George Coleman, among others, and recorded with Jeff Hamilton and Curtis Fuller. One of his more inventive moves was Chopin Meets the Blues, where he took Chopin melodies as a starting point for jazz improvisation, a concept he later scaled up into a big band setting. His live album Blues for the Date, made with the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, earned him an Edison Award. More recently he has been leading the New Jazz Orchestra, an eighteen piece ensemble focused on new work rooted in swing and improvisation, which released the album The Flying Dutchman to international praise.
