About

Peter Donohoe is one of those pianists who arrived at the instrument via an unusually circuitous route: he was a working percussionist, a rock drummer, a cimbalom explorer and a jazz improviser on vibraphone before deciding, in his final undergraduate year, to pour everything into the piano. That detour clearly shaped him. He went on to win the Joint Silver Medal at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1982, and his relationship with Simon Rattle stretched over 25 years, more than 50 concerto performances worldwide and a high profile appearance at Rattle's inaugural concert with the Berlin Philharmonic in 2002. His repertoire is famously vast, roughly 160 concertos alone, spanning Romantic warhorses like Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky alongside Messiaen, Busoni, Arthur Bliss and Henry Litolff recordings for Hyperion and Naxos. He has played solo recitals at the Proms for seventeen consecutive years and performed with orchestras across the globe. The CBE he received in 2010 was a long time coming for someone with that range.
