Peter Vermeersch is the kind of figure who quietly holds an entire music scene together. The Belgian composer, clarinetist and producer from Waregem has moved fluidly between jazz, classical, pop and avant garde territory, working with choreographers like Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and Wim Vandekeybus while also producing the debut album of dEUS, arguably Belgium's most significant indie act. His band X Legged Sally occupies a strange and fascinating spot in Belgian music history, described as both the last Belgian prog rock band and the first band of the new Belgian scene. After that split, he channelled his energy into the Flat Earth Society, a big band that mashes the Belgian brass band tradition with genuinely unpredictable creativity. His compositional work spans song cycles based on Paul van Ostaijen and Daniil Kharms, a big band opera written for the Ruhr Triennale, and a carillon piece performed at the Gentse Feesten during his stint as town composer of Ghent.
