About
Petra Berger built her name on a concept that few pull off convincingly: pairing operatic vocals with pop production to tell the stories of legendary women from history. Her 2001 debut solo album Eternal Woman, released on Universal Music Group, gave a voice to figures like Cleopatra, Joan of Arc and Mary Queen of Scots, weaving classical themes by Puccini, Mozart and Handel into original songs. The album traveled far beyond the Netherlands, finding audiences in Taiwan, Israel and Turkey, and her appearance in the 2002 Night of the Proms series cemented her profile at home. Before going solo, Berger cut her teeth in the duo Chess, scoring an early 1990s hit with a cover of "I Dreamed a Dream" from Les Misérables and releasing the musical theatre tribute record The Oscar Album in 1992. She also spent time performing lead roles on stage, including Johanna in Sweeney Todd and Belle in Beauty and the Beast. Her second album Mistress followed in 2003, this time shining a light on famous mistresses and deceived wives throughout history, rounding out a theatrical solo catalogue that she took on a full Dutch theatre tour in 2004.
