About
Phat Phunktion started as a one off gig at a University of Wisconsin Madison battle of the bands in 1996 and somehow never stopped. The nine piece Madison funk outfit built their sound around a heavy horn section drawing straight from the 1970s funk playbook, and local press in Japan once dubbed them "the new Tower of Power," which is about as high a compliment as that genre allows. They toured Japan twice, played major US festivals, and landed spots at New York venues like BB Kings and The Knitting Factory, all while Rolling Stone and Billboard took notice early on. Beyond the road work, co founder Al Falaschi arranged music for Clyde Stubblefield's album The Original and even appeared on Bon Iver's 22, A Million. Bandmate Tim Whalen orchestrated strings for Jorge Drexler's Oscar winning song. Since 2009 the band has run "Funk Out Cancer" fundraising concerts every other year, raising nearly $200,000 for cancer research by 2017.
