About
German born pianist and composer Philipp Rüttgers has built his trio work around a distinctive approach: finding new shapes inside old material. His second trio album digs deep into the complete output of Erik Satie, working through the Éditions Salabert catalogue to gather fragments and motifs, then carefully reshaping them into something that feels fully alive in a modern jazz piano trio context. The melancholy and enigmatic quality that defines Satie stays intact, but the music breathes on its own terms, with touches of contemporary jazz vocabulary woven in naturally. Rüttgers pushes well past the familiar Gymnopédies and Gnossiennes into obscure corners of the Satie catalogue, including Les Fils des étoiles and Uspud, both written during Satie's period with the Rosicrucian order. His playing reflects Satie's own preference for restraint, reaching for greater expression through fewer notes when the music calls for it. Drummer Sun Mi Hong and bassist Omer Govreen complete the trio, and the three listen closely to each other, letting transparency and space do the expressive heavy lifting.
