Philzuid is a Dutch orchestra with a programme that spans a wide range of orchestral repertoire, from Finnish and French nature poetry to British sea music and American concert works. One recurring thread in their concerts is a love of vivid tone painting: music that conjures landscapes, seasons and natural elements through purely orchestral means. They have shone a spotlight on composers such as Einojuhani Rautavaara, whose post romantic and spiritually charged works include the celebrated Cantus Arcticus and a Violin Concerto, alongside towering names like Debussy, Elgar, Britten and Stravinsky. Their programmes regularly bring in guest soloists, and the breadth of the repertoire they tackle reflects genuine curiosity rather than a narrow speciality. Works like Copland's Appalachian Spring suite, Barber's Knoxville: Summer of 1915 and Britten's Serenade for tenor, horn and strings all sit comfortably in their wheelhouse.
