About
Also known as: Photex, Rupert Mathew Swain Parkes, Rupert Parkes
Photek, the project of St Albans born producer Rupert Parkes, carved out a reputation in the 1990s as one of drum and bass's most technically precise and atmospheric architects. His 1995 Natural Born Killa EP on Goldie's Metalheadz label is still spoken about with reverence, and his 1997 debut album Modus Operandi on Virgin Records remains a benchmark of the genre. He has never been content to stay in one lane though: the 2000 album Solaris pivoted toward Chicago house and minimal techno, landing him a number one Billboard single with Robert Owens on 'Mine to Give'. Beyond the dancefloor, Parkes has built a serious second career scoring for film and television. He earned three consecutive Grammy nominations for Best Remixed Recording for his remixes of Daft Punk, Moby and Bob Marley respectively, and scored the TV series How to Get Away with Murder. He has also remixed David Bowie, Björk and Nine Inch Nails, with his rework of 'The Hand That Feeds' landing him KROQ daytime radio play. The 2012 album KU:PALM marked his return to releasing music under the Photek name after a four year break.
