About
Also known as: Symbiosis, Symbiosis Pianoduo
Pianoduo Symbiosis brings together two pianists performing at a single instrument or as a four hands duo, and their programming shows just how wide that format can stretch. A typical concert might open with the spare, meditative sound of Wim Mertens, move through the warmth of Brahms's sixteen waltzes, and settle into the heart of the set with Ravel's Ma Mère l'Oye, five movements drawn from fairy tales ranging from Sleeping Beauty to Tom Thumb. Ravel wrote it for children, but it reaches far beyond that. The second half of their programmes tends to shift gear. Schubert variations give way to Kapustin's Sinfonietta, a piece that pulls jazz rhythm and energy straight into a classical frame. It is a deliberately surprising combination, and that contrast seems to be exactly the point: Pianoduo Symbiosis builds concerts that refuse to stay in one place.
