About
Pig Destroyer built their reputation on being one of grindcore's sharpest and most unsettling acts. Formed in Alexandria, Virginia in 1997 by vocalist J. R. Hayes, guitarist Scott Hull and drummer Brian Harvey, they carved out a distinctive space in extreme music through Hayes' poetic and often deeply disturbing lyrics, Hull's ability to weave thrash, doom and punk into genuinely crushing riffs, and Harvey's technical precision behind the kit. Their 2001 record Prowler in the Yard was a turning point, landing them rave reviews in Kerrang! and Terrorizer and festival slots alongside acts like High on Fire and The Dillinger Escape Plan. They kept pushing into weirder territory over the years: Terrifyer came packaged with a surround sound DVD piece called Natasha, and when Book Burner dropped in 2012 it marked their first UK show in eight years. A big structural shift came in 2013 when they added their first ever bass player, making them a four piece after over a decade as a trio. More recent releases include The Octagonal Stairway in 2020 and Pornographers of Sound in 2021, showing no signs of slowing down.
