Andy Turner and Ed Handley have been making music together as Plaid since the early 1990s, originally coming up through The Black Dog before carving out their own path on Warp Records. Their sound sits somewhere between IDM, electronica, and what some critics have taken to calling 'post techno', built on syncopated rhythms, unusual time signatures, and a mix of live instruments and samples that gives it a distinctly warm, restless feel. Beyond their run of albums, Plaid have kept busy in some unexpected directions. They composed the original score for Michael Arias' anime film Tekkonkinkreet in 2006, then returned for his second feature and further short films. Their remix catalogue is vast enough to fill two dedicated compilations, and they have worked with artists ranging from Björk to Goldfrapp. Recent YouTube uploads like 'Wallet', 'Coat', and 'New Family' suggest they have been active in the studio as recently as 2024.
