About
Playa Fly is one of those Memphis rap figures whose name carries serious weight in underground circles. Born Ibn Young, he came up in the mid 1990s Memphis scene and made an immediate splash with the confrontational "Triple Bitch Mafia", a track that called out his former group and set the tone for a career built on raw, unfiltered Southern rap. His run on Super Sigg Records produced a string of underground hits, with "Nobody Needs Nobody" standing out as probably his most recognized track. Fly2K is arguably the most remarkable chapter in his story. He recorded parts of it from prison, spitting a cappella verses over the phone while serving a seven year sentence for narcotics possession, a commitment to the craft that earned him lasting respect in the Memphis rap community. After his release in 2006 he linked up with the New Prophet Camp and kept releasing material, including mixtapes and the long gestating Mafia All Day project.
