About

Few bands can say their name came from a rained out gig, but that's exactly how Portico got theirs, sheltering under a portico to play their set. The London group built their early reputation busking outside the National Theatre on the South Bank, developing a sound rooted in jazz, ambient and electronic music. Their debut album Knee Deep in the North Sea earned a Mercury Prize nomination in 2008 and was Time Out's Jazz, Folk and World album of the year. That record, like its follow up Isla, leaned on the hang, a rare modern percussion instrument that gave the band a distinctly warm, resonant signature. Over the years Portico has kept shifting shape. Their 2017 album Art in the Age of Automation, released as Portico Quartet, hit number one in the UK jazz chart, while the name Portico has been reserved for their more experimental electronic pop outings, including Living Fields. Memory Streams followed in 2019, and the band has kept releasing material since, with Terrain and Monument both appearing in 2021.
