About
Few bands can claim to have named an entire genre, but Possessed did exactly that. Their 1984 demo was literally called Death Metal, and the San Francisco Bay Area act is widely credited as the originator of the whole style, driven by Jeff Becerra's ferocious growled vocals and a playing speed that left most of their contemporaries in the dust. Alongside Metallica and Exodus, they helped forge the Bay Area thrash scene, and they launched the career of guitarist Larry LaLonde, who later turned up in Primus. The band's story is inseparable from Becerra's own, including a 1989 shooting during a robbery that left him paralyzed from the chest down. He kept his hand in the metal world throughout, and reformed Possessed in 2007. Their three studio albums span from the landmark Seven Churches in 1985 through to Revelations of Oblivion in 2019, a gap of over three decades that somehow only added to their legend.
