About
Also known as: Jamel Bousbaa
Potter Payper, real name Jamel Bousbaa, came out of Barking in East London and built a reputation through black box freestyles and grime blogs alongside fellow rapper KB before most people had heard of him. His trajectory took a serious detour when he served over five years in prison, but he came back swinging: in 2021 he signed to the UK arm of Def Jam Recordings, and in 2022 his track "Gangsteritus" featuring Tiggs Da Author broke into the UK top 40 after it appeared in the hit series Top Boy. That placement said a lot about where he sits in UK rap, somewhere between grime's raw energy and the harder edges of UK drill and trap, with a voice that carries genuine weight.
