About
Provoker started as Jonathon Lopez's solo vehicle for scoring fictional horror films, but the project really found its shape when Lopez crossed paths with vocalist Christian Crow Petty at a screening of The Greasy Strangler. That unlikely meeting sparked a creative partnership that blends Lopez's synth experimentation with Petty's R&B vocal sensibility, landing somewhere in the territory of post punk with a distinctly cinematic, eerie edge. Bassist Will Palacios rounds out the Los Angeles based trio. Their 2021 debut album Body Jumper, released on Swedish indie label YEAR0001, earned a 7.0 from Pitchfork for its clever songwriting wrapped in gaming imagery and dark introspection. Demon Compass followed in 2023, with a deluxe edition landing the year after. Their third album Mausoleum arrived in 2025, produced with collaborators including Kenny Beats, and marks something of a shift toward tighter, more polished production while keeping the haunting atmospheres and vivid, unsettling characters that define their sound.
