About
Also known as: PUPTHEBAND, Pup, Topanga
PUP stands for Pathetic Use of Potential, a put down from vocalist Stefan Babcock's grandmother that the Toronto punk four piece wore like a badge of honour. Originally called Topanga after a Boy Meets World character, they sharpened into a full on punk rock act and needed a name to match. Their self titled debut landed in 2013 on Royal Mountain Records and quickly earned them a reputation as one of Canada's best new bands, with Stereogum and CBC Radio 3 both taking notice early. Since then they've kept a relentless pace, releasing The Dream Is Over in 2016, Morbid Stuff in 2019, a six track EP called This Place Sucks Ass in 2020, and the fourth album The Unraveling of PUPTheBand in 2022. Their fifth album, Who Will Look After the Dogs?, followed in 2025. Recorded with producer Dave Schiffman in a Montreal studio owned by former Formula 1 driver Jacques Villeneuve, their records capture the kind of raw, high energy sound that made their live shows the stuff of legend on the Toronto circuit long before the wider world caught on.
