About
Pynarello is a Dutch orchestra with a rebellious streak, founded as a deliberate pushback against the rigid conventions of classical music. They perform everything from memory, no sheet music in sight, and their shows lean theatrical, weaving storytelling and movement into the music itself. The playing is always tight and polished, but the attitude is loose and adventurous. Their programmes tend to draw unexpected connections: baroque composers like Vivaldi, Tartini and Pergolesi sharing space with Stravinsky, gypsy jazz, tabla rhythms and hip hop inflected arrangements. One production traces the roots of Roma culture all the way to India and the Middle East, folding in Telemann alongside Roma folk traditions. Another pits the ensemble against Pulcinella, the commedia dell'arte trickster figure, in a musical battle of wills. Pynarello served as artist in residence at TivoliVredenburg, which says something about how seriously the classical world takes them, even as they keep poking it in the ribs.
