Radie Peat's voice is one of the most striking things in contemporary Irish folk: a powerful contralto with a commanding range, matched by a sharp sense of irony and a real emotional directness. The Dublin singer and multi instrumentalist has deep roots in the tradition, having picked up the concertina early on and cut her teeth playing sessions alongside her sisters. She went on to co found Lankum with Cormac Mac Diarmada and Ian and Daragh Lynch, a band that has pushed Irish folk into genuinely new territory. Beyond Lankum, Peat is also a founding member of ØXN, a project with Katie Kim, Eleanor Myler and John 'Spud' Murphy that digs into the darker corners of Irish song and storytelling. Where Lankum can feel expansive and raw, ØXN leans into something more incantatory, built around doom tinged folk and haunting laments. Between the two projects, Peat has become a central figure in the current wave of Irish music.
