About

Also known as: Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre philharmonique de la radio néerlandaise

The Radio Filharmonisch Orkest is a Dutch orchestra dedicated to the full range of the classical repertoire, from symphonic warhorses to rarely performed works. One of their most striking programmes centres on the 200th anniversary of Beethoven's death, pairing two contrasting sides of the composer in a single evening. The Sixth Symphony, the so called Pastoral, conjures birdsong, flowing streams and a sudden thunderstorm, drawing on Beethoven's love of the countryside around Vienna. Alongside it sits Christus am Ölberge, the only oratorio Beethoven ever wrote, performed together with the Groot Omroepkoor. In this oratorio Beethoven portrays the fear and tension of Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane, making it a natural fit for Good Friday, the exact date the composer died two centuries ago.
