About
Also known as: Rafael Riqueni del Canto, Rafael Riquenti
Few flamenco guitarists have stacked up accolades the way Rafael Riqueni has. The Seville native won Spain's two top national flamenco guitar prizes at just fourteen, and his adult career brought him the Premio Andalucía de Cultura, the Premio Nacional de la Crítica, and the Giraldillo a la Maestría, among others. In 2017 he picked up the XXXI Compás del Cante, which the Spanish press routinely calls the flamenco Nobel prize. His studio albums are where his real personality comes through. His 1986 debut Juego de Niños set a template for his style, and Mi Tiempo from 1990 pushed further by weaving in classical and jazz influences, complete with string arrangements he wrote himself. His second album, Flamenco, earned praise from leading flamenco scholars who called its Minera piece possibly the finest ever recorded in that style. Riqueni has always sought a sound distinctly his own, separate from the dominant schools of flamenco guitar, and that restless originality is what makes him one of the genre's true maestros.
