About
Also known as: Luis Ramón Valle Sánchez
Cuban jazz pianist Ramón Valle has spent decades building a reputation as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary jazz, blending classical training with Afro Cuban rhythms and the harmonic language of modern jazz. Critics have compared his style to McCoy Tyner, Chick Corea, and the Herbie Hancock of the 1960s, though Valle sidesteps the stereotypical expectations of Latin jazz entirely. He cites Chucho Valdés as a key influence. Valle left Cuba in the 1990s and eventually settled in the Netherlands, where he built a prolific recording career. He has performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival, Montreux Jazz Festival, and the Bimhuis, and collaborated with artists including Roy Hargrove, Eric Vloeimans, and Maite Hontelé. His discography spans originals and reimagined works by everyone from Ernesto Lecuona to Leonard Cohen. His 2020 album Inner State was recorded live, and most recently he released Havana with Maite Hontelé.
