Few punk bands from the 1990s revival left a mark quite like Rancid. Formed in Berkeley by Tim Armstrong and Matt Freeman, both veterans of ska punk legends Operation Ivy, the band hit their stride with the 1995 album...And Out Come the Wolves, a record that went gold and platinum and pushed songs like 'Time Bomb', 'Ruby Soho', and 'Roots Radicals' onto mainstream radio without ever abandoning the raw street punk energy that made them. The band famously turned down a major label push, with Madonna reportedly sending nude photos as part of the pitch, and stayed with indie punk home Epitaph instead. Over a career spanning more than three decades and ten studio albums, Rancid kept their original underground fanbase close while selling over four million records worldwide. Their sound blends punk rock, ska, hardcore, and skate punk in a way that still sounds lived in rather than calculated. The band released their tenth album, Tomorrow Never Comes, in 2023, showing no signs of slowing down.
